The immortal feat of Arshaluys Khanjiyan

She is a symbol of people’s fortitude and mercy.

From August 1942 to January 1943 Arshaluys Kevorkovna together with her relatives rescued wounded soldiers and officers of the Red Army.

Until the end of her days she remained to guard the graves of soldiers who died of wounds.

“People ask me: was it scary? Of course it was. When everything howls and whoops around, of course it was scary. Bullets are burning, whistling… Bombs are bursting, the forest is on fire. I was afraid for myself and for them. I often prayed to God in my mind. Young men were suffering, agonising in pain. Many fighters had to close their eyes forever,” Arshaluys recalled after the end of the Great Patriotic War.

To commemorate Arshaluys’ feat, a memorial was erected in 2015 in the city near the Eternal Flame. Another memorial was later opened in the Podnavisla tract. In 2018, the documentary and feature film “Arshaluys” premiered.
