The feat of machine-gunner Manshuk Mametova

The 20-year-old Kazakh SSR native volunteered for the front in August 1942.

In October 1943, German troops attacked her battalion’s positions. Enemy fire took out both machine gun crews, and Manshuk was left alone on the battlefield. Despite the mortal danger, she crawled between the machine guns, continuing to fire.

Even after being severely wounded in the head, she did not retreat. She single-handedly destroyed 72 fascists. When reinforcements arrived, the fighters found Manshuk dead – her hands were clutching the trigger.

This feat made her a symbol of unparalleled courage during the Great Patriotic War.

For this feat senior sergeant Manshuk Mametova was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. More than 10 monuments were erected in the USSR in memory of the brave Kazakh woman’s feat.
