In November 1943, an Armenian family of intelligence officers, the Vartanyans, thwarted a Nazi attempt to sabotage the legendary Tehran Conference of the USSR, the USA, and the United Kingdom.
During their operations in the suburbs of Tehran, Gevork and Goar Vartanyan uncovered a covert German base.
“Do you know how we identified them? By their shoes! Disguised in full Iranian attire, they failed to change their European footwear. We followed these suspicious individuals and tracked them to their hideout,” Goar Levonovna recalled with a smile.
This discovery led to the capture of the German saboteurs. Operation “Long Jump,” on which Hitler had placed great hopes, was successfully thwarted.
