“…The bushes whispered to me about you In the snow-white fields near Moscow. I want you to hear How my voice yearns for you…”

The words of the song “In the dugout” were known to every soldier at the front during the war. Every loved one, who was waiting for her soldier, also knew them.

The correspondent of the newspaper “Krasnoarmeyskaya Pravda” Alexey Surkov was at the front in November 1941. Our troops were coming out of the encirclement near Moscow. After heavy fighting Alexey Surkov spent the rest of the night sitting over his notebook in the dugout, at the soldier’s iron stove. Then he wrote a letter to his wife Sophia, which contained that very poem.

Composer Konstantin Listov wrote music to these verses.
