During the Great Patriotic War, when radio and telephone communications were vulnerable, and reports had to be transmitted quickly and discreetly, the help came… carrier pigeons!
A released pigeon traveled dozens of kilometers under fire to deliver a message to headquarters.
A lightweight container with a message inside was tied to the bird’s foot or tail. Pigeons flew long distances, and their speed could reach up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The Germans even specially trained hawks to hunt Soviet carrier pigeons, and for their destruction were given awards. But the birds still broke through.
One of the most famous pigeons is No. 48 from a unit commanded by Captain Bogdanov. He delivered an urgent report, despite being wounded in the wing, and saved the whole unit.
During the war years “military duty” pigeons delivered 150 thousand dovegrams, and 30 soldiers-pigeons were awarded with military orders and medals.
