On Victory Days, the Soviet press published a large number of poems.

Among them are poems by Alexei Surkov, Stepan Shchipachev, Samuil Marshak, Demyan Poor, Alexander Yashin and others.

In the newspaper “Pravda” was published a poem by Stepan Shchipachev “Soldier”:

He is there, on Elba, far from home,
Having reached the edge of the war itself,
In so many battles he was deaf from the thunder,
But now he’s deafened by the silence.

Here he stands on the silent battlefield,
Standing up to his full height, looking around him
At the black forest and the blue sky,
And wipes the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve…

He smiles and squints at the light,
Still smelling of smoke and dust.
So this is what Victory Day is like,
So this is when we reached it…
