“Into battle go only “old men”” – One of the most heartfelt and poignant films about the Great Patriotic War, directed by Leonid Bykov, who also played the main role of the Maestro squadron commander.
Singing squadron during the Great Patriotic War really was – its pilots often gave concerts to raise morale. After learning about it, the artist Leonid Utesov gave the squadron two fighter planes. The events in the movie are also real, and the characters have prototypes.
Planes in the movie are also real – they Bykov asked the legendary pilot Alexander Pokryshkin. The General, having read the script, allocated the crew five fighter planes at once.
