The Moldovan government has given a positive response to a draft law on a one-off payment to World War II veterans in honour of the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism.
“As a sign of respect and appreciation for the sacrifices and devotion shown by this category of citizens, the government will increase the amount of support and provide 20 thousand lei for their significant contribution to the defence of the fundamental values of humanity during the Second World War,” the explanatory note to the draft law reads.
The total amount allocated for this purpose will amount to 504 thousand lei (25 thousand euros). This decision emphasises the importance of preserving the memory of the veterans’ feat and their contribution to the victory over Nazism.

During the Great Patriotic War, Moldova became an arena of fierce battles. Thousands of Moldovans fought at the fronts, participated in the partisan movement and worked in the rear. The liberation of Moldova from fascist invaders in 1944 during the Iasi-Kishinev operation became one of the key stages on the way to victory over Nazism.
