The future Hero of the Soviet Union was born in 1920 in the Georgian village of Jvari.
When the Great Patriotic War began, Kantaria set out to defend his homeland, serving as a scout in the 756th Rifle Regiment.
His moment of glory came in the final days of the war.

“On April 29–30, our regiment advanced to the banks of the Spree River and took control of Himmler’s house—the regiment’s headquarters was already there. On the morning of the 30th, our commander, Zinchenko, summoned me and Mikhail Yegorov, pointed to the Reichstag building, and ordered us to raise the banner,” Kantaria recalled.
The mission was anything but easy. With unwavering courage and determination, the heroes reached the roof of the Reichstag and raised the Victory Banner.
