The Red Army soldiers cleared the islands of Wallin, Usedom and Rügen from the Nazis and occupied the last remaining large naval base on the Baltic.
“As a result of a swift blow our troops defeated the enemy garrison and took possession of the town of Svinemünde – one of the best equipped ports in Germany,” wrote Sovinformburo.
“With the mastery of these islands ended the offensive operation of the 2nd Belorussian Front. It is true that we still had to scour separate areas, neutralize small groups of Hitlerites who remained in the rear of our troops”, – Marshal Rokossovsky wrote.
On May 5, the front troops took 17,120 German soldiers and officers prisoner and captured
119 airplanes and 235 field guns.
