In 1975 the USSR Composers Union announced a competition for the best song about the Great Patriotic War for the 30th anniversary of the Great Victory.

A few days before the end of the competition, poet Vladimir Kharitonov and composer David Tukhmanov proposed their own version. The former is a front-line soldier with a wound, awarded three battle orders and medals. The second is a young author of pop hits.

The song did not take any place in the contest.

With hesitant steps the song started its way to fame. 8 May 1975 “Victory Day” was performed by the Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Army named after A. V. Alexandrov with soloist Eduard Labkovsky. 9 May 1975 – Leonid Smetannikov in the programme “Blue Ogonyok”.

Today the song is the unofficial anthem of the Great Holiday. The song is sung not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders.

You can listen to the song “Victory Day” in Kyrygyz language on the video.
