Mikoyan was the head of a special design department that was engaged in the development of high-speed fighters. Just before the start of the Great Patriotic War, the first MiG was created, an airplane named after the first letters of the surnames of Mikoyan and his colleague Mikhail Gurevich.
“I am often asked: what is the main thing in the work of an aircraft designer? I answer: it is creative work and the main thing in it is the ability to dream. When difficulties become insurmountable and obstacles multiply, it means that success is close,” Mikoyan said.
MiG-1 was created in an extremely short time, so it had many shortcomings. They were eliminated in the next modification – MiG-3.
Under the leadership of designers Mikoyan and Gurevich, 15 airplanes with high flight characteristics were developed between 1941 and 1945.
