Exactly 80 years ago – on April 21, 1945 – units of the 2nd Belorussian Front continued to force the Oder. It was the 1400th day of the war.

The Soviet aviation effectively repelled German tank counterattacks, striking at accumulations of enemy equipment and manpower. This caused the enemy panic and disorganization of troop control, the Pravda newspaper wrote that day.

“On April 21, fierce fighting continued along our entire front. Still everywhere there was gnawing through the enemy defenses. The forces for a decisive leap forward were still too little on our bridgeheads. The enemy felt it and strained every effort to throw us into the river. It did not succeed! Our valiant soldiers did not retreat a step, but on the contrary, used every opportunity to expand the already captured areas”, – Marshal Rokossovsky recalled.

On April 21, 156 German tanks and self-propelled guns were hit and destroyed on all fronts. In air battles and anti-aircraft artillery fire 56 enemy airplanes were shot down.
