Day 1376 of the war. Troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front under Marshal Rokossovsky stormed an important naval base and a major port on the Baltic.
“In the middle of the day General Popov’s units finally broke the resistance in the central quarters of Gdynia. The German troops, who had accumulated in the northern quarters, began to retreat hastily to the port, hoping to load on transports. But there were no more ships at the wharves. All of them under the influence of our aircraft and artillery went to sea, leaving the garrison to their fate. In a few hours the remnants of the enemy troops were pinned down to the port and surrendered as prisoners,” Red Star reported.
