Exactly 80 years ago – March 29, 1945 – the Red Army, pursuing the enemy, entered the territory of Austria.

It was the 1377th day of the war. The troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front captured the strategically important towns of Sombatel, Kapuvar and, having occupied Keseg, reached the Austrian border.

“The German garrison, reinforced by retreating units, fortified itself on the eastern outskirts of the town of Sombatel and repeatedly went into counterattacks. Soviet tankers, having made a detour maneuver, struck the enemy in the flank and broke into the city. In a fierce street battle the enemy garrison was defeated and retreated to the west in disorder. Our troops captured large trophies, including an armored train, 28 steam locomotives and 360 freight cars,” – Sovinformburo.
