On May 8, Europe celebrated the day of the end of the Second World War. Because of the round date – the 80th anniversary of the Victory – this year’s celebrations differed in scale from those of previous years. See how the anniversary was celebrated in the UK, France, Germany and other countries.
Great Britain
The celebrations in the UK lasted for several days. The London parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe took place on May 5, with about 1,000 troops from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force taking part, as well as 23 Royal Air Force aircraft. The military procession was also attended by representatives of the AFU. The military marched from Parliament Square, through Admiralty Arch, down Mall Street to Buckingham Palace. World War Two veterans watched the procession from the Queen Victoria Memorial. Seven military bands, including a horse band, took part in the parade and the air parade vehicles were joined by Lancaster aircraft built during the Second World War. The air parade concluded with a performance by the Royal Air Force aerobatic team, The Red Arrows.
