He was only 19 years old when he accomplished his feat.
In February 1943, his group was tasked to attack a stronghold in a village near Velikiye Luki.
The Red Army soldiers came under the dagger machine-gun fire of the Germans. Two enemy machine-guns were destroyed, Alexander Matrosov went to the third one and, having got close to it, threw grenades at it.
The machine gun was silenced, but when our soldiers went up to the attack, it again burst into murderous fire. Then Matrosov, having no other opportunity to fulfill the combat task and save the lives of his comrades, rushed to the breech and closed the embrasure with his body.
A few seconds received at such a cost were enough for the Red Army soldiers to overcome the sector shot by the breech, which became a decisive moment in the battle for the possession of the stronghold.
Matrosov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
