The Soviet troops fought actively on all fronts; on this day the assault on Königsberg began, which was victoriously completed three days later. As a result of battles in the north of East Prussia, in Czechoslovakia and in Austria about 17 thousand Hitlerites were taken prisoner, 28 tanks and 14 aircraft of the enemy were destroyed.
“In the Vienna direction the troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front with battles occupied the settlements of Schwechat, Altkettenhof, Rotnoisiedl (2 kilometres south of Vienna). At the same time, south-west of Lake Balaton, the front’s troops, advancing together with the Bulgarian army, occupied more than 50 settlements in Yugoslavia,” Sovinformbureau reported.
On the eve the front troops captured over 9 thousand soldiers and officers of the enemy and captured the following trophies: 11 aircraft, 24 tanks, 14 armoured personnel carriers, 99 field guns and 194 machine guns.
