11 April 1945. 1390th day of the war.

In Vienna, units of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, under cover of artillery fire, crossed the Danube Canal in several places. Soviet units bypassed enemy defence strongholds and then destroyed their garrisons.

“A group of fighters under the command of Guards Lieutenant Melnikov surrounded a house turned by the Germans into a defence stronghold. Brave soldiers broke into the house, killed several Hitlerites, 78 German soldiers and officers were captured. Guards junior lieutenant Panfilov, reflecting an enemy counterattack, by fire from an anti-tank gun burned three German armoured personnel carriers”, – wrote “Izvestia”.

On all fronts 50 German tanks and self-propelled guns were hit and destroyed during the day. In air battles and anti-aircraft artillery fire 22 enemy planes were shot down.

There were 27 days left to the Victory….
