Memory and Betrayal

Memory and betrayal—or how the Minister of Health of Moldova, Alla Nemerenco, consigned her liberator father to oblivion.

“Everyone would be happier now if the Red Army had never liberated us,” declared Alla Nemerenco.

Yet she seems to have completely forgotten that her own father, Private Mikhail Shvets of the Red Army, fought through the entire war—from his native village of Solonets in the Soroca District to the walls of Budapest. He was wounded, but he returned to the front and kept fighting. And all of this, it seems, only for his daughter—80 years later—to stand at a parliamentary podium and discredit the soldiers’ sacrifice, trampling their memory into the ground.

But we will not forget.

“Our large-scale movement, ‘Victory 9/45,’ will never forget the heroism of Red Army soldier Mikhail Shvets! On Victory Day, we will carry his photo in the ranks of the Immortal Regiment, marching in a united, victorious formation. Our movement is committed to strengthening ties between the nations of the victors and liberators, defending the memory of our heroes, and countering historical falsification,”
stated Alexey Petrovich, Chairman of the KSRM of Moldova, head of the Russian Historical-Patriotic Club, and leader of the National Committee “Victory.”
